3-23-09: Raising Arizona

Lyn Verinsky on Raising Arizona [v8]

A couple of weekends ago we had really good temps in the valley. The snow had mostly melted out, but it hadn't gotten hot yet either.

I climbed at the Arizona Avenue boulder in Camp 4 for the first time and put up a sit start to Spanish Flies,v3. It starts squeezing a slopey arete and transitions into the spicy top out of Spanish Flies. Scott Chandler and Lyn Verinsky got quick ascents right afterward, check out the video of Lyn's send above.

tricky and fun problem with two different options for crux move...not the prettiest ever but good movement on good rock!

Hey, wasn't this v7 just a week ago? If Midnight Lightning is the standard for v8 in the valley - this thing is more like v5. Really fun climbing regardless of the grade; I'm just trying to keep some consistency in grades per the discussion the other night.

I would say that Midnight Lighting would have to be a hard v8 (didn't Lisa Rands call it a v9 when she did it?) and Raising Arizona and easy v8. It just seems too hard for v7 to me.

The sad thing is that Midnight Lighting is reachy, so it isn't that hard for 'lankers' like me and Scott. I would never be able to do it if I had to use your beta!
